Ram Mandir Inauguration Holiday: list of states which have declared Jan 22 as holiday; are banks closed?

A number of state governments have proclaimed holiday for their employees on January 22, 2024 to allow then to take part in the celebrations for the inauguration of the Ayodhya Ram Mandir. Further, the Central Government has announced half-day for all Central Government offices, Central institutions. This means that public sector banks will be closed for half-day. Further, all banks in some states will be closed for the full day.

According to the PIB release dated January 18, “The order says, the Ram Lalla Pran Pratishtha at Ayodhya will be celebrated on 22nd January, 2024 across India. To enable employees to participate in the celebrations, it has been decided that all Central Government Offices, Central Institutions and Central Industrial Establishments throughout India will be closed for half day till 1430 hours on 22nd January, 2024. It is also advised that all Ministries/Departments of Government of India may bring the above decision to the notice of all concerned.” What this means, as per a PTI news report is that, “Public sector banks, insurance companies, financial institutions and regional rural banks will remain closed for half day on January 22 (till 2.30 pm) due to the Ram temple consecration ceremony in Ayodhya.”

Bank branches of private banks in Uttar Pradesh will be closed on January 22, 2024 (Monday). The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has updated its bank holiday matrix, which now states that all banks (including PSU and private banks) in Uttar Pradesh will be closed for the full day. For some private banks, even in Uttrakhand their branches will be shut.

The RBI classifies bank holidays into three categories: Holidays under the Negotiable Instruments Act, Holidays under the Negotiable Instruments Act and Real-Time Gross Settlement Holiday, and Banks’ Closing of Accounts.

Central Government has announced half-day closing till 2:30 pm on 22nd January 2024, at all Central Government offices, Central institutions & Central industrial establishments throughout India on the occasion of Ram Mandir Pran Pratishta.Bangalore Investment

“The facility of exchange / deposit of Rs 2000 banknotes will not be available on Monday, January 22, 2024 at any of the 19 Issue Offices1 of the Reserve Bank of India due to the half-day closure announced by the Government of India. The facility will resume on Tuesday, January 23, 2024,” the RBI said in a press release on January 19, 2023.

The following states have officially declared January 22 as a public holiday.

Uttar Pradesh: Uttar Pradesh is preparing for a huge celebration on January 22, when all government offices and educational institutions will be closed. Goa: Goa is celebrating the event by declaring January 22 to be a public holiday. Chief Minister Pramod Sawant has ordered the closure of government buildings and schools.Madhya Pradesh: Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Mohan Yadav has declared January 22 to be a public holiday for every government office and educational institutions.Haryana: The statement was issued by the administration led by Chief Minister Manohar Lal Khattar, who said that the holiday was initiated to commemorate the installation of Lord Ram’s idol.Chhattisgarh: The Chhattisgarh government has declared it as a holiday for all state government schools and colleges.Tripura: All the State Government Offices and educational institutions across the state of Tripura will remain closed till 2:30 PM on 22 January to enable the employees to participate in the celebrations of Ram Lalla Pran Pratishtha at Ayodhya.Odisha: The Odisha government has stated, “In view of the celebration of the Ram Lalla Pran Pratistha at Ayodhya, the state government offices as well as the Revenue and Magisterial Courts (Executive) will remain closed for half a day until 2:30 p.m. on 22.01.2024 (Monday).”Gujarat: Gujarat state government office will observe a half-day closure.Madhya Pradesh: Chief Minister Mohan Yadav of Madhya Pradesh is leading the festive wave, declaring January 22 a public holiday for all government offices andAssam: In Assam, state government offices and educational institutions will be closed until 2:30 PM on January 22.Maharashtra: The Maharashtra government has declared a public holiday on January 22 on the occasion of Ram temple inauguration at Ayodhya.Jharkhand: Jharkhand has declared a holiday for government schools on Monday, while its offices, other establishments and public sector banks will remain closed for half day .Delhi: Delhi government has announced half day for it government offices.
